Goodfellas (1990)
Goodfellas (1990) is a biographical crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. Set in Brooklyn during the mid-1950s, the film follows Henry Hill as he becomes infatuated with the Mafia lifestyle in his Italian-American neighborhood. Working under caporegime Paulie Cicero and alongside his fellow delinquents Jimmy ‘the Gent’ Conway and Tommy DeVito, Henry starts off as a fence for Jimmy and gradually progresses to more serious crimes. The trio spends their evenings at the Copacabana nightclub, indulging in their glamorous lifestyle surrounded by women. Despite initial concerns about Henry’s criminal activities, Jewish woman Karen Friedman falls for him and defies her parents’ disapproval to marry him. In 1970, Billy Batts, a made man in the Gambino crime family recently released from prison, disrespects Tommy at a nightclub owned by Henry. In response, Tommy and Jimmy retaliate by attacking Billy with violence, ultimately leading to his death.
Knowing that this act will likely result in retaliation from the mafia, Jimmy, Henry, and Tommy decide to hide Billy’s body in upstate New York. However, six months later they discover that the location is being developed, prompting them to relocate the body before it decomposes further. Four years later, Karen causes trouble for Henry by harassing his mistress Janice and threatening him with a gun. As a result of this incident, Henry moves in with Janice but is soon sent on a mission by Paulie to collect a debt from a gambler in Tampa alongside Jimmy. Upon their return, they are both arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison after being turned in by an FBI typist who happened to be the gambler’s sister. To provide for his family while incarcerated, Henry has Karen smuggle drugs into the prison and sells them to fellow inmates from Pittsburgh.
