The American horror film Gothika (2003), directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and written by Sebastian Gutierrez, was co-produced by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis. Dr. Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist at Woodward Penitentiary in rural western Connecticut, crashes her car one night to avoid hitting a young woman on a country road. After waking up, she discovers that she is now an inmate at the women’s ward where she works. Her colleague, Dr. Pete Graham, is treating her for the trauma and informs her that her husband Douglas has been brutally murdered with an axe. As she adjusts to life as an inmate, Miranda is plagued by visions of the young woman from the car accident who also appears in front of her and carves the words ‘Not Alone’ onto her arm. However, despite this evidence of harm inflicted on her body, hospital staff believe Miranda is causing self-harm.

Miranda forms a strong connection with her fellow inmate Chloe Sava, whom she had previously treated prior to their shared time behind bars. That night, she witnesses Chloe catching a glimpse of an Anima Sola tattoo on the perpetrator’s chest. Despite her claims, the guards dismiss her account. As time goes by, Miranda slowly recovers lost memories of the car accident and recalls that the mysterious woman is Rachel – the daughter of her boss Dr. Phil Parsons – who was believed to have died several years earlier. One late evening, Rachel’s ghost attacks Miranda and she manages to escape from the hospital. She returns to her residence and observes the scene of the crime, triggering vivid flashbacks of her own involvement in Douglas’s murder.
