Alfonso Cuarón’s sci-fi thriller, Gravity (2013), follows the journey of the Space Shuttle Explorer as it orbits Earth to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Commanded by veteran astronaut Matthew ‘Matt’ Kowalski, the ship is joined by Dr. Ryan Stone, who is on her first space mission to perform hardware upgrades on the telescope. However, their peaceful mission is interrupted when Houston reveals a dangerous situation caused by the Russian government shooting down a presumed defunct spy satellite. As more communication satellites are disabled by debris, Mission Control orders the crew to return to Earth immediately, leaving them alone in silence.
As the debris struck the Explorer and Hubble, Stone was torn from the shuttle and began tumbling through space. Luckily, Kowalski was able to use the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) to rescue her. Upon their return to the Explorer, they were met with devastating news – the Shuttle had sustained catastrophic damage and their fellow crew members had not survived. With the MMU as their only means of transportation, Stone and Kowalski decided to make their way to the International Space Station (ISS), located approximately 1,450 km (900 mi) away. Kowalski estimated that they had a narrow window of 90 minutes before the debris field completed another orbit and put them in danger once again.
