Green Street Hooligans (2005) is a British crime drama directed by Lexi Alexander, featuring Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam. The story follows Matt Buckner, an American student expelled from Harvard for drug possession. Despite the drugs belonging to his roommate Jeremy, who comes from a prominent family, Matt remains silent and takes $10,000 as payment for taking the blame. With the money, he travels to London to visit his sister Shannon, her husband Steve, and their son Ben. While there, Matt meets Pete, Steve’s younger brother and leader of a local football hooligan group – the Green Street Elite (GSE). When Steve asks Pete to take Matt to a match, Pete initially hesitates due to Matt’s nationality but ultimately agrees in hope that he might ‘learn something’.
Matt is introduced to Pete’s friends and colleagues at their local pub, The Abbey. They all get along well, except for Bovver, Pete’s right-hand man and assistant who has a strong dislike for Matt. After a couple of drinks, they go to watch a game. While the rest of the firm gets into a physical altercation with some Birmingham City fans, Matt decides to leave and take the train home. However, on his way back, he is ambushed by three Birmingham fans but luckily, members of GSE come to his rescue. Despite being outnumbered, the GSE successfully defend themselves until reinforcements arrive and scare off the opposing firm. This impressive display earns Matt respect from the GSE and he is officially welcomed into their group. As a result, he moves in with Pete and becomes an official member of the GSE.
