The American comedy-drama film Greenberg (2009), directed by Noah Baumbach, follows the story of Florence Marr as she works as a personal assistant for the Greenberg family in Hollywood Hills. Prior to their trip to Vietnam, Phillip Greenberg informs her that his brother Roger will be staying at the house while he builds a doghouse for their German Shepherd, Mahler. Carol opens up to Florence about how Roger has recently been released from a psychiatric hospital after having a nervous breakdown. When Roger arrives from New York City, he has an awkward interaction with Florence. He spends his days constructing the doghouse, observing neighbors swimming in the pool, and writing complaint letters. Ivan Schrank, a friend from Wales, invites him to a party at their former bandmate Eric Beller’s home where Roger feels out of place and Eric is openly hostile towards him.

At this party, Roger runs into his ex-girlfriend Beth and explains his reason for being in Los Angeles – to simply have some time off from doing anything. Roger gives Florence a call to catch up over drinks. Since Roger doesn’t have a car, Florence offers to give him a ride and they make a quick stop at her place for her purse. They start getting intimate, but Florence puts a pause on things due to recently ending a serious relationship and not wanting to engage in casual sex. Roger suggests keeping their relationship platonic and she agrees, yet they both feel strongly attracted to each other. During dinner, Eric vents about how Roger turned down a significant record deal for their band many years back. He’s amazed that Ivan, who was heartbroken by the missed opportunity, still maintains contact with Roger.
