Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Gretel & Hansel (2020) is a dark fantasy horror film based on the German folklore tale Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm. The prologue recounts the story of a father seeking help for his deathly ill baby daughter from a witch, who gives the child supernatural abilities. As she grows, she uses her powers to predict events but also reveals her darker side, leading to her father’s death and her abandonment in the woods. The focus then shifts to teenage Gretel and her younger brother Hansel, both hinted to possess their own supernatural abilities. They are sent out by their mother to find work after their father’s passing. While Gretel is offered employment as a housekeeper, she refuses due to the owner’s inappropriate questioning of her virginity. This angers their mother who threatens them with harm if they do not leave home.
The siblings run and stumble upon a hut to spend the night, but a ghastly figure attacks Hansel. Luckily, a huntsman swoops in to rescue the pair and takes them to his home for shelter. The next morning, he sends them on their way to search for employment. However, they get lost in the forest and soon face hunger pangs. Driven by the irresistible smell of cake, Hansel wanders off towards a house, with Gretel trailing behind. Inside, they meet Holda who kindly offers them food and lodgings in exchange for help. Following this arrangement, Hansel learns how to handle an axe while Gretel assists with housework. Although Hansel is content with their new abode, Gretel remains doubtful of Holda’s intentions and starts experiencing strange visions and unsettling nightmares. Upon realizing Gretel’s potential, Holda introduces her to witchcraft and teaches her how to fly using ointment on a broomstick.
