Directed by Phil Joanou, Gridiron Gang (2006) is an American biographical sports drama film that tells the story of Sean Porter, an employee at Kilpatrick Detention Center in Los Angeles. Frustrated by his inability to aid the troubled kids upon their release from the center – whether it be from street gangs or drug dealings – Porter devises a plan. He decides to form a football team, believing that it will instill in them the values of responsibility, maturity, and discipline. Carefully selecting individuals who he believes will benefit from this program, Porter gathers his team – the Kilpatrick Mustangs – and lays down the rules. ‘You’ll do things my way, not your way’, he states firmly. ‘Your way brought you here because you lost. And right now, you’re all losers. But if you accept this challenge and stick with the program, I promise you will all emerge as winners in the end’.

Two of the teens, William ‘Willie’ Weathers and Kelvin Owens, come from rival gangs: the 88’s and the 95’s respectively. This is evident by their jersey numbers, with Willie wearing 13 and Kelvin donning 31. The first game against Barrington Panthers, one of the league’s strongest teams, starts off on a high note for the Mustangs as they recover a fumble on their first drive. However, things take a turn for the worse as they are crushed by Barrington with a devastating 38-point loss. Despite this rough start of going 0-2, the Mustangs begin to find success when they learn to work together. In a heartwarming moment, Kelvin and Willie finally make amends when Kelvin makes a crucial block for Willie in a game-winning touchdown. As their season progresses towards playoffs, the Mustangs gain more media attention and supporters along the way.
