Gringo (2018)
Gringo (2018), an action comedy crime film directed by Nash Edgerton and written by Anthony Tambakis and Matthew Stone, follows the story of Richard Rusk and Elaine Markinson, co-presidents of Promethium Pharmaceuticals. While in their Chicago office, the two receive a call from Harold Soyinka, a company employee who has allegedly been kidnapped in Mexico. He claims that his abductors are asking for a ransom of five million US dollars. In an attempt to save him, Richard and Elaine fly to Mexico where they meet with Sanchez, head of Promethium’s local branch. However, Harold soon discovers that Sanchez has been illicitly selling Promethium’s newest product – medical marijuana in pill form – to a Mexican cartel. Fearing harm to their upcoming merger, Promethium decides to cut ties with the cartel. During dinner that evening, Harold secretly records Richard and Elaine’s conversation while they are away from the table and learns about the merger plans- which would ultimately result in him losing his job.
That evening, he discovers his wife’s infidelity and desire for a divorce. Sanchez informs cartel leader Villegas about their disconnection from Promethium; Villegas injures Sanchez and, mistaking Harold for Promethium’s leader, orders his capture. Richard and Elaine leave Mexico the next day without Harold, who has seemingly vanished. Seeking refuge at a nearby motel, Harold persuades the motel’s owners, brothers Ronaldo and Ernesto, to act as kidnappers in a plot to extort money from Richard by pretending to have been taken hostage. In desperation, Richard calls his former-mercenary-turned-humanitarian brother Mitch to rescue Harold. While spending the evening at a bar, Harold believes his plan has failed. The bartender alerts the cartel when he recognizes Harold. Two men appear and snatch him up, but on the way to Villegas’ hideout, Harold manages to overpower them and causes their vehicle to crash.
