Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009)
Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench (2009) is an American romantic musical film written, directed, and produced by Damien Chazelle in his feature directorial debut. Set in modern-day Boston, Massachusetts, it follows the story of a couple who have been dating for three months. Guy is an up-and-coming jazz trumpeter while Madeline is an introvert searching for work. As time passes, the initial thrill of their romance diminishes and Guy’s eye begins to wander towards Elena, a more outgoing woman. When they meet on a busy subway car, their immediate connection spells the end for Guy and Madeline’s relationship. In the aftermath of their breakup, Madeline makes efforts to move on by finding a new job, changing apartments, learning an instrument, and going on dates.
Nothing seems to fall into place until she spontaneously travels to New York, where she meets Paul, a Frenchman who immediately catches her eye. Meanwhile, Guy begins to question his choices when he realizes Elena has no interest in his music and thoughts of Madeline keep resurfacing. Despite finally deciding to win her back, it seems Madeline has moved on by the time he returns. Frantically searching for her, he stumbles upon her preparing for a move to the Big Apple. On a deserted street corner, the once-lovers are faced with whether they should move on or reignite their past love.
