Hackers (1995)
The film Hackers (1995), directed by Iain Softley, follows the story of Dade ‘Zero Cool’ Murphy, a young hacker. At the age of 11, Dade caused a seven-point drop in the New York Stock Exchange and was fined $45,000. This resulted in a ban from using computers and touch-tone telephones until his 18th birthday. When that day arrives seven years later, Dade breaks into a local TV station and changes the broadcast. He is challenged by another hacker known as ‘Acid Burn’ and introduces himself as ‘Crash Override’. While at school, Dade becomes part of a group of hackers including Ramon ‘The Phantom Phreak’ Sanchez, Emmanuel ‘Cereal Killer’ Goldstein, Paul ‘Lord Nikon’ Cook, Joey Pardella (the youngest member without an alias), and Kate ‘Acid Burn’ Libby – the same hacker who thwarted his attack at the TV station.
Hoping to showcase his abilities, Joey successfully enters the ‘Gibson’ supercomputer owned by Ellingson Mineral Corporation. However, while downloading a garbage file as evidence of his achievement, his mother disrupts his connection, resulting in a fragmented file. Unbeknownst to Joey, his intrusion has been detected by former hacker and current computer security officer Eugene ‘The Plague’ Belford. The Plague recognizes the garbage file as a worm that he himself had inserted in order to deceive Ellingson. He falsely claims that the file is actually the code for the destructive ‘Da Vinci’ computer virus and accuses hackers of being responsible. In order to retrieve the file, The Plague enlists help from the US Secret Service. In reality, however, The Plague had only inserted the ‘Da Vinci’ virus as a decoy to divert attention from his own actions.
