The story is based on a 2004 documentary called The Conscientious Objector, which was directed by Terry Benedict. Set in 1929 Lynchburg, Virginia, the film follows the life of Desmond Doss, a young man with a strong Seventh-day Adventist upbringing. After an accident nearly kills his brother during some roughhousing, Desmond becomes even more committed to the belief that “Thou shalt not kill”. Years later, while helping to transport an injured man to the hospital, Desmond meets a nurse named Dorothy Schutte. They fall in love and Desmond opens up to her about his passion for medical work. However, when the United States enters World War II after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Desmond decides to enlist in the Army as a combat medic. His father Tom, who suffers from PTSD after serving in World War I, is deeply troubled by this choice. Nevertheless, Desmond and Dorothy continue their relationship and become engaged.
Doss is assigned to basic training with the 77th Infantry Division, led by Sergeant Howell. Despite excelling physically, his decision to not handle a rifle and train on Saturdays sets him apart from his comrades, making him an outcast. In an attempt to have him discharged under Section 8, Howell and Captain Glover cite Doss’s religious convictions as a possible sign of mental instability, but their efforts are denied. As a result, Doss is subjected to strenuous tasks in hopes of breaking his resolve. One night, he is even physically assaulted by fellow soldiers who try to force him to reveal their identities. However, Doss remains steadfast and refuses to name his attackers. Despite the hardships, his unit successfully completes basic training and are given leave for some time. During this break, Doss plans to marry his fiancée Dorothy; however, his refusal to carry a firearm leads to an arrest for insubordination.
