Hail, Caesar! (2016) is a period black comedy film that takes place in 1951 Hollywood. Eddie Mannix, head of property protection at Capitol Pictures, has the crucial job of shielding the studio’s stars from scandal and upholding their desired public image. Unfortunately, this responsibility leads him to frequent visits to the Catholic church confessional, much to the chagrin of the clergy. Despite his wife’s urgent requests, Eddie struggles to quit smoking on a day that’s even worse than usual – and ‘usual’ is already pretty bad for him. To add to his troubles, DeeAnna Moran, the wholesome and unmarried ‘mermaid’ of the screen, is pregnant and showing soon. And her belief about who the father is only complicates things further, leaving no hope for a marriage to legitimize her pregnancy.

Laurence Laurentz, the sophisticated director of drawing room comedies, is hesitant to cast Hobie Doyle, the studio’s singing cowboy, in a role as a refined character in his latest film. This is especially concerning since Hobie’s background is that of a simple Southern cowboy who stumbled into acting. Adding to Eddie’s stress, Baird Whitlock – the notorious womanizing and heavy-drinking star of the studio – has disappeared during filming for his epic biblical gladiator movie. It turns out he was kidnapped by individuals claiming to be from the future and demanding a ransom of one hundred thousand dollars. Eddie must retrieve Baird and also navigate past the prying twin gossip columnists Thora Thacker and Thessaly Thacker, with Thora threatening to dig up old scandalous information about Baird if she can’t find new gossip.
