Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later (1998), an American slasher film directed by Steve Miner, is a direct sequel to the original Halloween franchise. Ignoring the previous three installments’ Jamie Lloyd story arc, it picks up almost twenty years after Michael Myers’ escape from Smith’s Grove and return to Haddonfield to kill his long-lost sister, Laurie Strode. Following an explosion caused by Dr. Sam Loomis at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, Michael’s body vanished and was presumed dead. On October 29, 1998, Marion Wittington (née Chambers), Loomis’ former colleague who cared for him until his death, returns home in Langdon, Illinois to discover her house has been broken into and the file on Laurie Strode missing. Seeking assistance from her teenage neighbor Jimmy, she finds him and his friend Tony murdered by Michael before she too is killed. As Michael flees in Jimmy’s car, police arrive on the scene.
In Summer Glen, California, Laurie resides as ‘Keri Tate’ after faking her death to evade Michael. She shares a home with her son, John, and serves as the headmistress of Hillcrest Academy, a prestigious boarding school. Her trusted companions are her secretary, Norma Watson, and her partner, Will Brennan, who also works as the guidance counselor. Unfortunately, Laurie still struggles with chronic nightmares and alcoholism due to her past trauma and the constant fear of being found by her brother. Meanwhile, Michael finds himself stranded after a flat tire and resorts to stealing a vehicle from a mother and daughter at a rest stop. Surprisingly, he lets them go unharmed in his pursuit of Laurie.
