Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), an American slasher film directed by Dwight H. Little and written by Alan B. McElroy, follows the story of Michael Myers, who has been in a coma for a decade after the explosion at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. On October 30, 1988, during his transfer from Ridgemont Federal Sanitarium to Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, Michael wakes up upon hearing about his niece living in Haddonfield. He kills the ambulance crew and returns to his hometown with the intention of killing her. Dr. Loomis, who also survived the explosion, learns of Michael’s escape and gives chase once again. Following him to a gas station and diner where he takes coveralls from a mechanic and kills a female clerk, Michael escapes on a tow truck causing an explosion that destroys Loomis’s car and cuts off communication lines provided by Ridgemont. Undeterred, Loomis continues to pursue Michael on foot and eventually hitches a ride with a priest driving a pick-up truck.
In Haddonfield, Laurie’s daughter Jamie Lloyd struggles with recurring nightmares involving The Shape and endures bullying at school because of her infamous uncle. On Halloween night, her foster parents Richard and Darlene attend a party, leaving their eldest daughter Rachel in charge of babysitting. This prompts Rachel to cancel her plans with boyfriend Brady. After picking Jamie up from school, they stop for ice cream and a Halloween costume, ultimately settling on a clown outfit. While they are browsing, Michael suddenly appears and steals a new mask. He then chases after Jamie, but flees when she screams in terror. Later that evening while trick-or-treating, Michael breaks into the Carruthers’ house and kills their family dog. Meanwhile, Loomis arrives in Haddonfield and informs the newly-appointed sheriff Ben Meeker of Michael’s return.
