Happy Feet (2006), an animated comedy directed, produced and written by George Miller, tells the story of emperor penguins and their unique ‘heartsongs’ used to attract a mate. When Norma Jean falls for Memphis, they become mates and lay an egg which Memphis cares for while Norma Jean goes to fish with the other females. During the harsh winter, Memphis accidentally drops the egg but thankfully it hatches into Mumble, who is unable to sing but can tap dance. Despite this difference, Mumble is captivated by Gloria, known as the most talented penguin in her age group. One day, Mumble encounters hostile skua – led by a yellow-banded bird who claims he was abducted by aliens – and narrowly escapes them by falling into a crevice.
Now a young adult, Mumble faces constant ridicule from the elders and their leader Noah. Despite narrowly escaping a leopard seal attack, Mumble finds solace in the company of five Adelie penguins – Ramón, Nestor, Lombardo, Rinaldo and Raul – who are collectively known as ‘the Amigos’. These penguins quickly embrace Mumble’s unique dance moves and invite him into their group. While exploring the frozen landscape, they come across a mysterious human excavator buried in an avalanche. Curious about its origin, they turn to Lovelace, a rockhopper penguin adorned with plastic rings around his neck that he claims were bestowed upon him by mystical beings. Meanwhile, the emperor penguins are in the middle of mating season with Gloria at the center of attention. The Amigos try to help Mumble impress her by having Ramón sing a Spanish version of ‘My Way’ while Mumble lip syncs behind him.
