Erik, son of Mumble and Gloria, struggles to keep up with his fellow Emperor-Land penguins on the dance floor. Along with his friends Bo and Atticus, he follows Ramón, leader of the Amigos and one of Mumble’s pals, to Adélie-Land. This snowy land is now under the rule of Sven, a flying penguin who is not all he seems. Sven had previously convinced the humans to spare him by showing off his impressive flight skills before joining forces with Lovelace (formerly known as ‘Guru’). Lovelace was fired from his job and talks about escaping humans by fleeing to Antarctica. In Adélie-Land, Sven astonishes the locals by finding moss for them and uses his ‘Sven Think’ ability to help Ramón woo Carmen – his desired mate who does not reciprocate his feelings. In the meantime, Mumble locates Erik and advises him to return home with a little push from Sven himself.
As Will, an adventurous krill with a philosophical outlook, sets out to uncover the mysteries beyond the swarm, his loyal friend Bill is hesitant but stays by his side for safety. Once they venture away from the swarm, they realize their vulnerability as bottom dwellers on the food chain. Will takes action by consuming another creature in an attempt to ‘move up’ while Bill becomes increasingly paranoid. Despite Mumble’s reassurance that Erik is special and will eventually find his purpose, Erik remains fixated on Sven. During a treacherous ice bridge crossing, Bryan the Beach Master and his sons deny passage to the penguins, leading to a heated confrontation resulting in Bryan’s accidental plunge and entrapment below. Mumble devises a clever plan to lure a leopard seal onto thin ice, freeing Bryan and earning his respect. However, Erik attributes this success to his use of ‘Sven Think’, much to Mumble’s disappointment.
