The American crime comedy film, Happy New Year (1987), directed by John G. Avildsen and starring Peter Falk, follows two aging thieves named Nick and Charlie on their last heist before retirement in ritzy Palm Beach, Florida. Their target is the well-guarded Harry Winston jewelry store, which has high-tech security. Edward, the store’s manager, unknowingly welcomes a disguised Nick, posing as an elderly customer looking for an expensive gift for his terminally ill wife. Meanwhile, dressed as his true self, Nick meets Carolyn, a sophisticated and attractive woman who owns the antique shop next door to the jewelry store.

As he haggles over a coveted Louis XVI table with the woman he’s getting to know, a romance begins to blossom. Coincidentally, an elderly lady stops by Harry Winston in hopes of making a purchase as well. Unbeknownst to Nick, she is actually his accomplice in disguise. During their visits to the store, Nick takes note of the security system while his supposed chauffeur Charlie assists. On the night of their planned robbery, most of Nick’s preparations go smoothly, but not everything goes according to plan. Furthermore, Nick didn’t anticipate Carolyn’s involvement or her willingness to start a new life in South America with another partner as long as he avoids prison time.
