Harsh Times (2005)
Harsh Times (2005) is an American action crime film written and directed by David Ayer in his directorial debut. The film follows former U.S. Army Ranger and GWOT veteran, Jim Davis, who struggles with PTSD. Determined to marry his Mexican girlfriend, Marta, and start a new life together in the United States, Jim returns to Los Angeles, California. There he reunites with his best friend Mike Alonzo and Mike’s girlfriend Sylvia – a young attorney who urges Jim to help Mike hand out resumes as he recently lost his job due to outsourcing. Despite Jim getting denied for a position at the LAPD because of his psychological profile, he ends up getting drunk with Mike.
After meeting up with Jim’s ex-girlfriend, they are interrupted by her current boyfriend and his friends. A brawl breaks out, but Jim gains the upper hand. Amidst the chaos, Mike reveals a gun and they use it to steal from the others, taking their drugs and weapons. Later, Jim plays a prank on Mike by leaving fake messages on his phone pretending to be interested employers. The following day, they reunite and find Sylvia in high spirits thanks to the fake calls. Deciding to sell the stolen gun, they head to a “paisa” bar but quickly leave when their potential buyer is killed. While Mike is horrified by the violence, Jim is exhilarated by witnessing death once again.
