Hatfields & McCoys (2012)
Hatfields & McCoys (2013) is a Western television miniseries produced by History channel in 2012. The three two-hour episodes aired over three consecutive days in May, and became the network’s first scripted drama (excluding a previous miniseries, The Kennedys, which was not aired in the US). While the story takes place in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia and Kentucky, it was actually filmed in Romania near Brașov using the Carpathian Mountains as a stand-in. The debut of part one drew record-breaking ratings for History channel and some of the highest numbers in cable TV history. Over 13 million viewers tuned into the first episode, making it the most-watched single broadcast on ad-supported cable (excluding sports). The demographic numbers were also impressive, with 4.8 million viewers aged 18-49 and 5.8 million viewers aged 24-54. Part two saw a slightly lower but still impressive audience of 13.13 million viewers and an adult rating of 3.7 among those aged 18-49, making it the top program on cable for that night. Part three continued this trend with an even higher audience of 14.29 million viewers and an adult rating of 4.0.
The tale of the rivalry that nearly sparked a conflict between Kentucky and West Virginia. Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy, once comrades, experienced a falling out at the end of the Civil War upon returning to their respective homes – Hatfield in West Virginia and McCoy in Kentucky. Misunderstandings and heightened tensions quickly escalated into an all-out battle between the two clans (partly triggered by a stolen pig). With mounting animosity and external involvement, the feud gained global attention as state governors clashed and eventually, even the U.S. Supreme Court had to step in.
