He Got Game (1998)
The American sports drama film, He Got Game (1998), was written, produced, and directed by Spike Lee. It centers around Jesus Shuttlesworth, an exceptional high school basketball player being heavily recruited by top college programs. However, his father Jake is currently serving time at Attica Correctional Facility for accidentally killing Jesus’ mother Martha six years ago. The governor of ‘Big State’, one of the schools vying for Jesus’ talents, grants Jake a work release in hopes that he can convince his son to sign with their program and secure an early release from prison. As soon as he is released, Jake reaches out to his daughter Mary Shuttlesworth, who warmly welcomes him back into her life.
Upon arriving home from school, Jesus avoids his father’s gaze and instructs his sister to remove the unfamiliar person in their living room. Later, he agrees to meet with his father at a different location, away from Mary. Throughout the film, Jake continuously attempts to convince Jesus to attend Big State without success. Eventually, he reveals the arrangement made by the governor, but Jesus remains indifferent to his father’s predicament. Flashbacks reveal the intense basketball training Jesus underwent under his father’s tutelage and the tragic night when an argument between Jake and Jesus turned deadly after Mary stepped in.
