Head in the Clouds (2004) is a war drama film written and directed by John Duigan. The original screenplay focuses on the tough decisions young lovers must make in the face of growing political turmoil in late-1930s Europe. Unfortunately, the film was both a critical and financial disappointment. In 1924 Paris, 14-year-old Gilda Bessé is the daughter of a French aristocrat and an emotionally unstable American mother. A fortune teller predicts that her life will end at age 34. Years later, during a rainstorm in 1933, Gilda seeks refuge in the room of Guy Malyon, an Irish first-year student at Cambridge University. After a disagreement with one of her professors, Guy kindly offers her shelter for the night. As their relationship grows, they are separated when Gilda’s mother passes away and she chooses to leave England.

A few years later, Guy spots her as an extra in a Hollywood film. Soon after, he receives an unexpected letter from her, inviting him to join her in Paris, where she has taken up photography. There, Guy finds out that Gilda is residing with Mia, a Spanish-born nursing student and model. He also learns that Gilda has a lover who she swiftly leaves behind upon Guy’s arrival. The three of them have settled into an unconventional living situation; however, the changing world events are starting to affect their daily lives. It is the peak of the Spanish Civil War, and passionate about supporting the army of the Second Spanish Republic for some time now, idealistic Guy is determined to do his part as Francisco Franco’s nationalists gain power.
