Heartbreak Ridge (1986)
Clint Eastwood produced and directed the American war film, Heartbreak Ridge (1986). Eastwood also starred in the film. Three years prior, Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Thomas ‘Tom’ Highway schemes a way to return to his former unit, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Second Marine Division. On his journey back, Highway crosses paths with Corporal ‘Stitch’ Jones who asks to borrow money for a meal at a rest stop. However, Jones ends up stealing Highway’s bus ticket, leaving him stranded. Upon arriving at his destination, Highway’s new commanding officer, Major Malcolm Powers, sees him as old-fashioned and assigns him to the Reconnaissance Platoon (part of his assault battalion). Coincidentally, this platoon includes Jones.
The previous sergeant had allowed their inactivity leading up to his retirement but Highway takes charge and implements a rigorous training program. Their plan to use resident bodybuilder ‘Swede’ Johanson to intimidate him, just released from the brig, backfires when Highway defeats him in a fight. The conditioning yields positive outcomes and fosters camaraderie and admiration for Highway. However, he constantly clashes with Powers and his assistant, First Platoon Staff Sergeant Webster, who disapprove of his unconventional training techniques (such as firing an AK-47 above their heads to familiarize them with its sound).
