Heaven’s Gate (1980), an epic Western film directed and written by Michael Cimino, follows the story of two recent Harvard graduates, Jim Averill and Billy Irvine. During their graduation ceremony, the Reverend Doctor delivers a speech on the value of education and its connection to different social classes. However, Irvine, as the class orator, has opposing and irreverent views. The festivities continue with a celebration and male students serenading the female attendees, including Averill’s girlfriend. Twenty years later, Averill is now a marshal traveling through Casper, Wyoming on his way to Johnson County. In this booming town, new European immigrants are clashing with wealthy cattle barons from the established Wyoming Stock Growers Association over stolen cattle for sustenance. A friend of Averill’s and an enforcer for the stockmen named Nate Champion kills one suspected rustler and dissuades another from stealing a cow.

During a board meeting led by Frank Canton, the Association discusses plans to eliminate 125 settlers who have been identified as thieves and anarchists. One member in attendance, Irvine, appears to be intoxicated. After leaving the meeting, Irvine shares this information with Averill. As Averill exits, he has a heated argument with Canton and ends up knocking him to the ground. Later that night, Canton enlists others to carry out the planned killings. Meanwhile, Ella Watson, a madam at a bordello in Johnson County originally from Quebec, is fascinated by both Averill and Champion. The two are seen skating and dancing together at ‘Heaven’s Gate’, an expansive roller skating rink built by local businessman John L. Bridges.
