Hell or High Water (2016)
In David Mackenzie’s film, Hell or High Water (2016), the Howard brothers take matters into their own hands in West Texas, robbing two branches of the Texas Midlands Bank. Despite their detailed plans, Tanner’s impulsive behavior constantly puts Toby on edge. The recent passing of their mother has left their ranch in debt due to a reverse mortgage given by the bank. This debt could lead to losing their property if not resolved. Meanwhile, Toby is determined to secure a better life for his estranged sons after oil is discovered on their land. Assigned to the case are two Texas Rangers, Marcus Hamilton and Alberto Parker. As Hamilton nears retirement, he quickly unravels the robbers’ methods and personalities through his investigation. Unbeknownst to Toby, Tanner strikes again at a different bank while he sits at a nearby diner.
After successfully acquiring the stolen funds, the brothers travel to Oklahoma where Toby has a casino help convert their ‘winnings’ into a check written to the Texas Midlands Bank. With untraceable money in hand, they return to Texas. Despite Hamilton and Parker’s unsuccessful attempt at staking out another branch of the bank, Hamilton is able to piece together a pattern in the bank robberies. With their next target identified, he and Parker head there. Despite a busy crowd, the brothers continue with their plan while being pursued by a security guard and an armed civilian. Tanner takes matters into his own hands and eliminates both threats. During their escape, Toby is shot by locals as they race away from town with the posse hot on their trail. In an effort to evade law enforcement, Tanner uses an automatic rifle to protect himself and his brother as they split up.
