Her Smell (2018) is an American drama film written, co-produced and directed by Alex Ross Perry. The story unfolds through five distinct scenes, interwoven with home movie footage from the band’s earlier days of success – gracing magazine covers, posing for photo shoots, and receiving gold records. As the first scene begins, punk rock group Something She finishes a show and lead singer Becky Something heads backstage for a brief ceremony with her personal shaman. Her emotions rapidly swing from joy to aggression as her bandmates, ex-husband, manager, and former collaborator all attempt to guide her towards positive choices: recording their next album, booking future shows, and creating stability for her child. The scene concludes as she turns a corner with her baby in tow and collapses drunkenly, vomiting on herself.
In the second vignette, Becky, drummer Ali van der Wolff, and bassist Marielle Hell struggle to record the band’s next album in the studio. Frustrated, Ali quits and is followed by Marielle, leaving manager Howard Goodman feeling distraught as he tries to make room for his new band Akergirls. Despite their departure, Becky remains determined to stay and inserts herself into Akergirls’ recording session. The third scene sees Becky opening for Akergirls after they have achieved fame, with Ali returning to support her. However, she shows up two hours late with a film crew and proceeds to berate her ex-husband Danny and mother Ania, the only people still willing to tolerate her selfish behavior. When Ania gives her some papers from her estranged father, Becky becomes violently upset and unleashes verbal abuse at her mother before assaulting Ali. She then rushes onstage in a stupor once again.
