Hideaways (2011)

Agnès Merlet directs the fantasy thriller film, Hideaways (2011), written by Nick Murphy. Starring Rachel Hurd-Wood and Harry Treadaway, it is a co-production between France, Ireland, and Sweden. James Furlong comes from a long line of family members with strange abilities. His grandfather, Charlie, would go temporarily blind at the thought of sex while his father, Philip, could shut off electrical devices when frightened. Despite a tumultuous birth resulting in the death of his mother, James’ fate remains uncertain as to whether he possesses any powers. Growing up in rural Ireland, he learns about his ancestors’ quirks from his grandmother and becomes determined to discover any hidden abilities within himself. However, his experiments lead to disastrous consequences for their livestock and ultimately the loss of both Philip and his beloved grandmother, Charlotte. At just ten years old, James is now the only surviving member of the Furlong family.
Upon arriving at St. Judes reformatory, James struggled to adapt to his new surroundings. Coming from a life of home-schooling on the farm, he lacked the necessary social skills and athletic abilities that other boys possessed. Unfortunately, this made him an easy target for bullies like Kevin and Stephen. However, there was one boy who showed kindness towards James – Liam. But when Tinkerbell, the hurling Coach’s dog, met an untimely demise at the hands of James’ powers, suspicion fell on Kevin due to his smug demeanor. In retaliation, Kevin and Stephen attacked James, blaming him for getting Kevin in trouble. A mysterious illness then spread throughout the reformatory, leaving only James and Liam alive – though Liam suffered from lung problems as a result of their escape from the deadly outbreak.
