High Crimes (2002), an American legal thriller film directed by Carl Franklin, stars Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman who reunite after their previous collaboration in the 1997 film Kiss the Girls. Claire Kubik, an attorney, and her woodworker husband Tom enjoy an idyllic life in Marin County, California. However, during a Christmas shopping trip to San Francisco’s Union Square, Tom is suddenly arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for his alleged involvement in the brutal murder of nine civilians in El Salvador in 1990. Claire is stunned to learn that Tom’s true identity is Ronald Chapman and he had been part of a covert military operation while serving in the United States Marine Corps. This revelation shakes Claire’s belief about their seemingly simple and happy life together.
Despite the challenges, Claire remains resolved to assist Tom in clearing his name, regardless of any revealing information she may uncover about him. She is resolute in her pursuit of the truth and determined to rescue her husband from a life behind bars. Although Tom admits to being present at the scene of the mass murders, he maintains his innocence and denies any involvement in the brutal crimes. He suggests that he is being used as a scapegoat to protect Major James Hernandez who currently holds a position under Brigadier General Bill Marks. With determination, Tom is adamant about proving his innocence and pleading for justice to prevail. He hopes that local authorities will expose the true culprit and administer appropriate punishment.
