High Plains Drifter (1973)
Directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Ernest Tidyman, High Plains Drifter (1973) is an American Western film. In this isolated mining town of Lago in the Old West, a mysterious stranger rides out of the desert. The hired gunmen meant to protect the town taunt and threaten him, but he swiftly takes them all down without breaking a sweat. Later on, the attractive blonde Callie Travers insults him with flirtatious comments. That night, as he sleeps in his hotel room, the Stranger has a vivid dream of Jim Duncan, a U.S. Marshal, being brutally whipped to death by Stacey Bridges and brothers Dan and Cole Carlin while the townspeople silently observe. The next day, Callie takes a shot at the Stranger while he’s bathing. But to her surprise, he comes out unscathed after ducking underwater.
With their previous defenders gone, Lago’s town council offers the Stranger anything he wants if he agrees to protect them from Bridges and the Carlins who are about to be released from prison. Gradually, it is revealed that the townspeople had hired the outlaws to kill Duncan after he uncovered their illegal mining activities on government land. In order to avoid paying the outlaws, they plotted to blame them for gold theft and now seek revenge against them. The Stranger, knowing of these schemes, takes advantage of the situation by making Mordecai sheriff and mayor, standing up for a Native American family who were refused service at a shop, and even securing new saddle and boots for himself.
