His Dark Materials (2019 — 2022)

Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials (2019–2022) is a fantasy drama TV series that is produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Productions. BBC One and HBO co-produce the show, with HBO also handling worldwide distribution. The story follows orphan Lyra as she embarks on a quest to find her missing friend and uncovers a kidnapping plot involving a mysterious substance called Dust. The first eight-episode season debuted on 3 November 2019 in the UK on BBC One, and on 4 November in the US and other countries via HBO. The second season, consisting of seven episodes, premiered on 8 November 2020 in the UK and 16 November in the US. The third and final season, spanning eight episodes, first aired on HBO on 5 December 2022 and later on BBC One on 18 December 2022. Critics have praised all three seasons for its talented cast, stunning visuals, high production quality, captivating score, and faithful adaptation of the source material.

The story of His Dark Materials takes place in a multifaceted reality, where characters shift between different worlds. Adapted from Philip Pullman’s trilogy with the same title, this alternate universe depicts a unique existence where people’s souls manifest as animal-like companions known as daemons. We follow the journey of Lyra, a young orphan residing at Jordan College in Oxford under the rule of the Magisterium – a powerful religious and political institution. As Lyra uncovers a potential danger involving Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter, she also learns that she is part of a witches’ prophecy that revolves around changing the fate of the world. In her pursuit to find her missing friend, Lyra stumbles upon several abductions and an intriguing substance called Dust, which ultimately leads her on an epic adventure to other realms. Additionally, the prophecy reveals that Lyra’s destiny is intertwined with Will Parry, a teenage boy from our conventional world who is being pursued by individuals linked to his estranged father.
