Pete Egan, Nick’s best friend, confides in him about being bullied by Annie Newton, a troubled teen. On one occasion when Nick tries to intervene, it turns into a physical altercation. Annie’s circle consists of violent thieves and her boyfriend Marcus is currently on parole for similar crimes. As Nick says goodbye to Pete before leaving for London, Annie decides to rob a jewelry store next door where Marcus is stealing a car.
Despite Marcus’ objections and attempts to take the jewels for himself, Annie keeps them and pushes him to try and stop her. Suspecting Annie’s lack of control, Marcus informs the authorities. Upon her arrest, Annie accuses Pete of betraying her after witnessing her stashing stolen goods in her locker. Fuelled by anger and disbelief, she resorts to physically assaulting Pete in an attempt to force a confession. Despite his claims of innocence, Pete eventually reveals Nick’s name, under the assumption that he has already fled to London. However, unbeknownst to him, Nick had given his ticket away at a party and decided not to leave. When Annie and her gang come across Nick on his way home from the party, they run him off the road and brutally attack him. In a state of panic, Annie believes she has caused Nick’s death and they dispose of his body in a sewer.
