Hollywoodland (2006)
Hollywoodland (2006), a mystery drama film directed by Allen Coulter and written by Paul Bernbaum, follows the story of Louis Simo, a Los Angeles private investigator more focused on financial gain than client satisfaction. In June 1959, Simo takes on a case to spy on Chester Sinclair’s wife to catch her in an act of infidelity. While visiting his ex-wife Laurie, he discovers that his son is mourning the death of George Reeves, the actor best known for playing Superman on television. The police ruled Reeves’ death as a suicide after finding him with a gunshot wound to the head in his Beverly Hills home. But with inside knowledge from a former colleague, Simo soon uncovers suspicious details about the investigation that the police are avoiding.
Driven by the desire to establish his own reputation, Simo delves into his investigation and uncovers several discrepancies in the official account of Reeves’ death. Meanwhile, he engages in tense exchanges with Laurie regarding their parental shortcomings, exacerbated by their son’s troubled state. In 1951, Reeves, a once-promising actor whose stardom has faded since his role in Gone with the Wind, catches the attention of a stunning woman and they spend the night together. The next day, a newspaper photo reveals that she is Toni Mannix, wife of Eddie Mannix – a powerful studio executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Fearing that an affair with a married mogul could ruin what remains of his career, Reeves is frustrated that Toni kept this information from him. Despite her reassurance that their relationship is open and not to worry, he is filled with apprehension.
