Home Fires (2015–2016) is a British period television drama that follows the lives of Women’s Institute members on the Home Front during World War II. When Frances Barden reforms the WI, she promotes inclusivity and is eventually elected President. Meanwhile, Pat, a committee member, faces abuse from her husband Bob, who expects her to attend to his every need. As Pat gains recognition within the town and WI, Bob’s jealousy and anger towards her increases, blaming her for his perceived lack of success as a writer. The newly formed WI’s first project is gathering wild blackberries to make jam, reducing the need for imported goods. With the declaration of war, men in the town contemplate their roles. Miriam’s son David is eager to enlist in the Navy despite his mother’s fears. After a conversation with his father, a WWI veteran, David decides to wait to be drafted in order to ease his mother’s worries and allow her time to come to terms with his decision.

Miriam’s fear of losing her son to war is so great that she deliberately omits his name on the National Registry form sent by the government. Despite her efforts, David enlists in the Navy after learning what she has done. A short while later, an official letter arrives from the Navy, causing Miriam to panic and hide it without opening it, assuming it is news of David’s death. When Bryn eventually discovers the hidden letter, they learn that David is only missing in action. Although this situation may seem bleak, Miriam cannot help but feel a glimmer of hope knowing that he may still be alive somewhere. Meanwhile, Dr Campbell is diagnosed with lung cancer which prevents him from enlisting. His wife, who had been wishing for something to keep him out of service, is now horrified at the news. Spencer is drafted but decides to register as a conscientious objector. However, this decision leads to him being vilified and tormented by his friends and neighbors. The situation reaches its peak when a mob gathers and covers his bicycle with blood and chicken feathers as a form of punishment for his beliefs.
