Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) is an epic Western directed and produced by Kevin Costner. Co-written with Jon Baird, it’s based on a story by the pair and Mark Kasdan. In 1859, surveyors mark stakes in the San Pedro Valley to outline the borders of Horizon, a forthcoming frontier town. Soon after, Desmarais, a missionary, discovers the deceased surveying party and buries them before establishing Horizon. Four years later, an Apache raid led by Pionsenay strikes the now-flourishing town and kills several residents, including Frances Kittredge’s husband and son. During the chaos, local boy Russell Ganz flees on horseback to seek help from nearby Camp Gallant. 1st Lt. Gephardt and Sgt. Major Riordan lead a detachment of Cavalry and Infantry to assist with burying the dead, searching for raiders’ tracks, and recovering survivors alongside Neron Chavez and his Pima Indian Scouts.
Frances and her daughter Elizabeth join the Army to find safety at Camp Gallant. Meanwhile, Russell joins a group led by survivor Elias Janney and scalp-hunter Tracker to track down the Apache. Gephardt cautions them about retaliating against the Natives solely for profit from scalping. As Frances and Elizabeth adapt to their new surroundings at Camp Gallant, Gephardt’s non-interventionist beliefs clash with his Commanding Officer, Colonel Houghton, who upholds the ideology of manifest destiny. Elizabeth forms connections with some of the soldiers stationed at the Post, but is saddened when they are called back to fight in the Civil War. As a romance blossoms between Frances and Gephardt, Pionsenay disagrees with tribal elder Tuayeseh about his raids on settlers.
