Horton Hears a Who! (2008)
Horton Hears a Who! (2008) is an American animated children’s film based on the 1954 book of the same name by Dr. Seuss. In the Jungle of Nool on May 15th, Horton, the eccentric nature teacher, discovers a faint cry coming from a floating dust speck. Curious, he pursues it and places it atop a pink clover. Much to his surprise, he learns that the speck is home to Whoville and its inhabitants, led by Mayor Ned McDodd. His family includes his wife Sally and 96 daughters with names all beginning with ‘H’, along with one son, JoJo. Despite being next in line for mayor, JoJo is reluctant to accept the role due to his fear of disappointing his father and doesn’t speak. As Horton carries the speck with him, strange occurrences begin happening in Whoville such as earthquakes and unpredictable weather changes. The mayor faces pushback from the town council, particularly their opportunistic chairman who undermines his concerns.
Upon hearing from Dr. Mary Lou LaRue, the mayor contacts Horton and learns that Whoville’s safety is at risk. In order to save it, Horton teams up with his trusted companion, Morton the mouse, and decides to place the speck on Mt. Nool – the most secure location in the jungle. However, their plans are met with opposition from the Sour Kangaroo, who repeatedly demands that Horton give up the speck in fear of her own authority being challenged. Along with the Wickersham Brothers, a mischievous group of monkeys, she resorts to force against Horton’s efforts. Eventually, she enlists Vlad Vladikoff – a foolish vulture – to forcefully dispose of the speck.
