Hostiles (2017)
Hostiles (2017) is an American western drama film written and directed by Scott Cooper, based on a story by Donald E. Stewart. Set in 1892, the movie follows the story of Rosalee Quaid, a settler who faces a brutal attack from a Comanche war group that results in the death of her husband and three children. In Fort Berringer, New Mexico, Captain Joseph Blocker receives orders from Colonel Abraham Biggs to escort Cheyenne war chief Yellow Hawk and his family back to their tribal lands in Montana. Despite his past with Yellow Hawk, which includes the loss of friends and comrades, Blocker reluctantly accepts the mission as it is sanctioned by President Harrison and refusal could result in severe consequences.
As he prepares for his final mission, US Cavalry captain Joseph J. Blocker selects the members of his detail: his longtime aide Corporal Woodson, promising newcomer Lieutenant Kidder, and trusted friend First Sergeant Thomas Metz. Additionally, under the orders of regimental colonel Abraham Biggs, Private DeJardin, a young recruit who speaks French, is assigned to the group. This patrol will be different from any other for Joe; under a presidential order, he must escort terminally-ill Cheyenne chief Yellow Hawk and his family back to their Montana native land as a ‘humanitarian gesture’. However, as they make their journey from Fort Berringer, New Mexico to the Valley of the Bears, Joe’s deep-seated hatred for Indians is reignited after encountering a burned homestead and adding fresh widow Rosalee Quaid to their group to help bury her children.
