Hours (2013)
Hours (2013) is an American thriller film directed and written by Eric Heisserer, centered around Nolan Hayes and his newborn baby in the midst of Hurricane Katrina. Prior to the storm’s arrival in 2005, Nolan brings his wife Abigail to the emergency room as she enters labor five weeks ahead of schedule. Despite the doctor’s explanation that Abigail gave birth to a baby girl but succumbed to liver failure, Nolan remains adamant that she is still alive and mourns her loss. However, he quickly learns that their premature baby must remain on a ventilator for the next two days until she can breathe independently. As the hurricane intensifies and floods the hospital, evacuations are underway and Nolan is left alone with his daughter (whom he names after her mother). A nurse assures him help will return, but when the power shuts off, Nolan must find a way to keep his baby alive amidst chaos.
After discovering a hand-cranked generator in the storeroom, he manually charges the ventilator battery. However, the charge only lasts for three minutes. In addition, he locates more IVs to nourish his baby and some food and drinks for himself. Each time he recharges the battery, it drains faster. Despite juggling between seeking assistance and keeping the battery functioning, he takes moments to reminisce about how he met his daughter’s mother – in a daring attempt to foil a bank robbery. As he explores the hospital, Nolan comes across a stray dog who needs care. He decides to name him Sherlock and even has imaginary conversations with his late wife while caring for him. Eventually, Nolan heads to the rooftop where helicopters are circling above the building.
