The American movie House of Wax (1953), directed by Andre de Toth and released by Warner Bros, is set in New York City during the early 1900s. The main character, Professor Henry Jarrod, is a talented sculptor who owns a wax museum featuring historical figures who have met gruesome ends. However, his business partner Matthew Burke is dissatisfied with Jarrod’s refusal to create more sensational exhibits that would draw larger crowds, like their competitors’. Burke decides to end their partnership and proposes burning down the museum for its twenty-five thousand dollar insurance money. When wealthy art critic Sidney Wallace expresses interest in buying out Burke’s share upon his return from Egypt in three months, Burke grows impatient and sets the museum ablaze. In the ensuing chaos, Burke overpowers Jarrod and leaves him for dead as the building explodes.
After Jarrod is presumed dead, Burke claims all of the insurance money for himself. However, a disfigured man in a cloak later strangles Burke and stages his death as a suicide. Shortly after, the same man also kills Burke’s fiancée, Cathy Gray. Sue Allen, Cathy’s jobless roommate, returns home to find the murderer and is chased briefly before finding refuge at her friend Scott Andrews’ house. That same night, the killer steals Cathy’s body from the nearby morgue. Meanwhile, Wallace receives a letter revealing that Jarrod has actually survived the fire but is now wheelchair-bound with crippled hands that prevent him from sculpting. Jarrod proposes an investment opportunity for Wallace in his new wax museum featuring statues created by his assistants; deafmute Igor and alcoholic Leon Averill will assist in the creation process.
