The American legal drama thriller series, How to Get Away with Murder (2014–2020), premiered on ABC in 2014 and concluded in 2020. Created by Peter Nowalk and produced by Shonda Rhimes and ABC Studios, the show follows Annalise Keating, a prominent criminal defense attorney and law professor at Middleton University in Philadelphia. Annalise handpicks five first-year students from her class to intern at her firm: Wes Gibbins, Connor Walsh, Michaela Pratt, Asher Millstone, and Laurel Castillo (collectively known as The Keating 5). They work alongside Annalise’s employees Frank Delfino and Bonnie Winterbottom. The first season delves into various clients of Keating’s as it unravels two interconnected murders through flashbacks and flashforwards: Lila Stangard, the mistress of Annalise’s husband who was also a student at Middleton, and Sam Keating himself – who was killed by one of Annalise’s interns.

In season 1, the story follows two timelines. The first shows Wes, Connor, Michaela, and Laurel dealing with the aftermath of Sam’s murder and attempting to hide his body. Meanwhile, flashbacks reveal the events that led to Sam’s death, including Annalise getting involved in the Lila Stangard case at Wes’ request. This leads her to uncover Sam’s affair and raise suspicions about his possible involvement in Lila’s murder. The final six episodes focus on Annalise’s efforts to help her interns cover up Sam’s murder and implicate him in Lila’s death, as well as flashbacks to Lila’s final moments before she was killed.

In season 2, Annalise defends Caleb and Catherine Hapstall, who are accused of murdering their adoptive parents. While Wes searches for Rebecca with her foster brother, Connor struggles in his relationship with Oliver and Asher joins forces with Assistant District Attorney Emily Sinclair to keep his secrets hidden. In the middle of the season, Sinclair’s murder leads to a cover-up orchestrated by Annalise, which results in her being shot by Wes. As the season progresses, Wes delves into his mother’s suicide from a decade ago, uncovering Annalise’s involvement through flashbacks. The finale reveals that Frank was responsible for the car accident that killed Annalise’s baby, leading her to send him away. Meanwhile, Michaela and Asher become romantically involved and Wes meets his biological father shortly before he is fatally shot by an unknown assailant.

Following Wallace Mahoney’s death in season 3, the five students are each trying to move forward. However, a new mystery arises when Annalise’s home is set ablaze with a person inside. This leads to Annalise’s struggles with alcoholism and her establishment of a free legal clinic. Meanwhile, Oliver joins Annalise’s team, leaving Connor after rejecting his acceptance to Stanford. As for Michaela and Asher, their romance progresses along with Wes and Laurel’s relationship. Frank also begins working towards redemption for causing the death of Annalise’s child. Eventually, it is revealed that Wes was killed before the fire and that it was commissioned by Laurel’s disapproving father. Subsequently, Annalise is arrested for Wes’ murder while Frank attempts to confess in order to help her.

In season four, Annalise enlists the help of therapist Dr. Isaac Roa to aid in her recovery from alcoholism. As she focuses on her healing, she severs ties with Bonnie, who has taken a new position as an assistant district attorney under DA Todd Denver. Alongside the interns, Annalise fights for justice by freeing a woman with a lengthy criminal record and launching a class action lawsuit against the state for their inadequate public defender’s office. Meanwhile, Laurel uncovers that her father, Jorge Castillo, is responsible for Wes’ death and devises a plan to obtain incriminating evidence from his law firm with the assistance of Michaela, Oliver, Frank, and Asher. However, during the evidence gathering mission, their classmate Simon accidentally shoots himself with Laurel’s gun and Asher is arrested as a result. To add to the chaos, Laurel goes into premature labor after being accidentally struck by Frank. Despite these challenges, Annalise successfully saves Laurel’s baby. Yet Jorge attempts to gain custody of his grandchild by using evidence of Laurel’s past struggles with addiction and mental illness against her in court.

In season five, Annalise and her team embark on a fresh start after winning their class-action case in the Supreme Court. She takes on a job at Caplan & Gold to aid in her future cases, while still teaching at Middleton. The rest of the group – Connor, Michaela, Asher and Laurel – begin their third year of law school alongside new student Gabriel Maddox, who joins Annalise’s class. Frank becomes suspicious of Maddox’s motives for being at Middleton and Asher secures an internship at the DA’s office under Bonnie’s guidance. Meanwhile, Connor and Oliver plan their wedding but eerie flashforwards hint at another murder occurring. Governor Birkhead is revealed as the mastermind behind the ongoing scrutiny against Annalise.

In the sixth season, Laurel and Christopher disappear while Emmett Crawford dies at the end of the previous season. This leads to Annalise feeling guilty and going on a bender, eventually disappearing into rehab. She returns after facing her past mistakes, just in time to support her remaining top students as they finish law school and search for Laurel and Christopher. Meanwhile, Michaela, Connor, and Asher are also looking for their friend and her son while preparing for graduation and life after school. However, things escalate when Governor Birkhead gets the FBI involved to investigate Annalise, her students, and their connections. As a result, all the murders and wrongdoings from the past six seasons are exposed, forcing them to make tough decisions that will impact their lives, relationships, and futures forever.
