Armored Car Robbery (1950)
Richard Fleischer’s Armored Car Robbery (1950) is a thrilling heist film about a meticulously planned robbery of an armored car during its stop at a sports stadium. However, things go wrong and a determined Los Angeles cop takes up the chase. Meanwhile, criminal mastermind Dave Purvis hatches a plot to rob the final pickup of the day. In his quest for accomplices, he enlists struggling Benny McBride, who calls upon low-level criminals Al Mapes and Ace Foster to join the gang. Benny’s motivation is to win back his estranged wife Yvonne, but little does he know that she is now seeing someone else – Purvis himself. The planned robbery at minor league Wrigley Field goes awry when a passing police patrol car gets involved.
One officer is killed by Purvis, and the gang manages to escape. Determined to bring the killer to justice, Lt. Jim Cordell throws himself into the case, treating rookie Danny Ryan brusquely. During the hail of gunfire, Benny is gravely injured and demands medical attention and his share of the loot. However, Purvis shoots him dead, causing Mapes to stir up trouble by correctly deducing their relationship. As they attempt to flee from the police, Foster is killed and Mapes and Purvis escape separately with all the stolen goods. In search of clues on Purvis’ whereabouts, Mapes heads to Yvonne’s burlesque workplace where he is intercepted by waiting police who arrest him and uncover Purvis’ true identity.
