How to Train Your Dragon (2010), an animated film based on the book by Cressida Cowell, follows the story of Hiccup, the son of Viking chieftain Stoick the Vast. The village of Berk is constantly under attack by dragons, and Hiccup, who is considered too weak to fight, instead devotes himself to creating mechanical devices with guidance from village blacksmith, Gobber. When he accidentally shoots down a rare dragon known as a Night Fury, he can’t bring himself to kill it. As Stoick prepares to lead a strike against the dragons’ nest, he enrolls Hiccup in dragon-fighting training with fellow teens Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut and Tuffnut (twins), and Astrid who Hiccup secretly has feelings for. Despite struggling in the class, Hiccup finds Toothless (the Night Fury) in the forest with an injured tail fin from their earlier encounter. Ultimately befriending him and using his ingenuity to create a harness and prosthetic fin that allows them to fly together.
With the knowledge gained from Toothless, Hiccup successfully controls the captured dragons during their training sessions, earning the admiration of his peers. Stoick’s fleet returns from their unsuccessful trip. As part of his final exam, Hiccup is tasked with killing a dragon. In an attempt to escape with Toothless, Astrid uncovers their hiding spot. Despite this setback, Hiccup takes her for a flight to showcase Toothless’ friendly nature. However, they are irresistibly drawn towards the dragons’ nest where a colossal creature known as the Red Death commands its smaller counterparts to bring it live prey. Upon realizing that these dragons are being forced to attack Berk in order to survive, Astrid suggests telling the village about it. But Hiccup cautions against it in order to protect Toothless.
