Hugo (2011), an adventure drama directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, follows the story of a boy who lives alone in the Gare Montparnasse railway station in Paris during the 1930s. The film, adapted from Brian Selznick’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, centers on Hugo’s journey as he becomes involved in a mystery surrounding his father’s automaton and renowned filmmaker Georges Méliès. After his father’s tragic death, twelve-year-old Hugo is taken in by his uncle Claude, an alcoholic who works at the museum. While living with him, Hugo discovers a broken automaton and together they attempt to repair it using notes written in their notebook. When Claude suddenly disappears, Hugo must continue maintaining the clocks at Gare Montparnasse to avoid being discovered by Station Inspector Gustave Dasté.

In an effort to repair the automaton, Hugo uses stolen parts, convinced that it holds a message from his father. However, he soon discovers that the machine requires a heart-shaped key. His attempts to obtain one lead him to a confrontation with toy store owner, Georges, who takes possession of Hugo’s notebook and threatens to destroy it. Isabelle, Georges’ goddaughter, suggests that Hugo confronts Georges and demand the return of his notebook. As recompense for the stolen parts and in exchange for potentially getting his notebook back, Georges proposes that Hugo works at his toy store. Accepting this offer, Hugo begins working at the store while also maintaining clocks on the side. During this time, he becomes fast friends with Isabelle and is surprised to find out she wears a heart-shaped key given to her by Georges. In turn, Hugo reveals to her the automaton and they use the key to bring it to life.
