Husbands and Wives (1992)
Husbands and Wives (1992), an American comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, centers on the lives of two couples: Jack and Sally, and Gabe and Judy. The plot begins with Jack and Sally informing Gabe and Judy at their apartment about their separation. Gabe is taken aback, while Judy takes it personally and feels deeply wounded. The four of them then head out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner, still grappling with the situation. Some time later, Sally goes to her colleague’s apartment to start an evening at the opera and dinner. She uses the colleague’s phone to call Jack and accuses him of having an affair during their marriage after finding out he has moved on with someone else. Meanwhile, Judy and Gabe meet Jack’s new girlfriend Sam – an aerobics instructor – while shopping together.
During this outing, Gabe refers to Sam as a ‘cocktail waitress’ and expresses his disbelief that Jack would leave Sally for her. Later on, Judy introduces Michael – her coworker from the magazine – to Sally, who then start dating each other. However, Sally ultimately feels unsatisfied in this relationship. Meanwhile, Gabe has struck up a friendship with Rain, one of his students who offers constructive feedback on his novel manuscript. While attending her 21st birthday celebration, they share a fleeting romantic moment. However, Gabe ultimately decides to not let their relationship progress any further. At the same party, Jack discovers that Sally is seeing someone new and becomes consumed with jealousy. This leads to a heated argument between him and Sam, prompting Jack to leave and return home.
