Hustle (2022)
Hustle (2022), an American sports comedy-drama directed by Jeremiah Zagar and co-produced, follows the story of Stanley Sugerman. As an international scout for the Philadelphia 76ers, Stanley lives a life constantly on the road in search of future basketball stars. While his job is supported by team owner Rex Merrick, he often clashes with Rex’s son Vincent. However, when Rex unexpectedly passes away, Vince takes over and demotes Stanley to assistant coach. This allows him to spend more time at home with his wife Teresa and daughter Alex. But after three months, Vince demotes Stanley yet again to scout overseas for new talent. In Spain, Stanley connects with his former college teammate Leon Rich who encourages him to leave the 76ers and become a player agent instead. When Stanley’s plan to scout a player in Spain falls through, he stumbles upon a remarkable undiscovered talent while watching a local pick-up game.
Stanley initially tries to talk to Bo Cruz, but is rejected until he resorts to using Facetime to get in touch with Dirk Nowitzki as proof of his authenticity. Bo and his mother Paola then share his background: starting as a young and skilled player, he was invited to play in America at 15 years old. However, he chose to remain in Spain when his girlfriend became pregnant with their daughter Lucia. Bo currently works construction jobs and also makes money playing basketball. Following an impressive workout with the Spanish national team, Stanley urges the 76ers front office to immediately sign Cruz, but Vincent remains doubtful. Taking matters into his own hands, Stanley pays for Cruz’s trip to the US and promises him a spot on the Sixers or a chance at entering the NBA draft. At the airport, Bo runs into trouble due to a previous assault conviction in Spain. Although he is released, authorities warn him that any further arrests could result in deportation from America.
