I Am Love (2009)
I Am Love (2009) is an Italian romantic drama film directed by Luca Guadagnino. The wealthy Recchi family, known for their textile manufacturing in Milan, gather for a formal dinner party hosted by Tancredi and Emma to celebrate the birthday of their patriarch, Edoardo Sr. Despite his declining health, Edoardo Sr. remains a strong presence in the family business. As the busy servants work around them, the family shares disappointment over Edoardo Jr.’s recent loss in a competition on the same day as his grandfather’s birthday. But Edoardo Jr. soon arrives with news that he has invited his girlfriend Eva, from the prominent Ugolini family, to join the celebrations and announce their engagement. Meanwhile, his siblings Gianluca and Elisabetta express frustration over being served yet again with ‘ukha’, a Russian soup that is Edoardo Jr.’s favorite dish thanks to his mother Emma’s influence since childhood.
The grandfather, after years of working alongside his son Tancredi, decides to pass down the family business. Surprisingly, he also announces that Edoardo Jr. will be inheriting a share. During the celebratory dinner, Elisabetta presents her grandfather with a photograph as a gift, deviating from their usual tradition of exchanging paintings. Though disappointed at first, he is urged by his wife Allegra ‘Rori’ Recchi to move past it. As the birthday festivities continue, Edoardo Jr. is pleasantly surprised by a visit from Antonio, the chef who bested him in a recent competition. Antonio brings a stunning cake as a gift and Edoardo introduces him to his mother, flattered by the kind gesture.
