I Love You to Death (1990)
I Love You to Death (1990) is an American black comedy film directed by Lawrence Kasdan. Set in Tacoma, Washington, the story follows Italian American Joey Boca as he confesses his infidelity to a priest during church. Despite admitting to cheating on his wife Rosalie with several women over the past few weeks, Joey struggles to remember the exact number and details of his affairs. His lack of remorse shocks the priest. Joey and Rosalie have been married for years and share two children, while also co-owning a pizza parlor and an apartment building. As the manager of the building, Joey often rents apartments to his lovers and provides them with extra ‘maintenance services’ beyond just fixing plumbing issues.
At Devo, a young employee is infatuated with an older colleague, Rosalie. Despite repeatedly trying to convince her otherwise, the young employee’s concerns about Joey’s cheating fall on deaf ears due to Rosalie’s unwavering trust in him. However, Rosalie’s mother, Nadja, who hails from Yugoslavia, does not share her daughter’s blind faith and dislikes Joey for his controlling and demanding behavior. Despite working long hours at the pizza parlor, Rosalie is still expected to cook, clean, take care of their child, and cater to Joey’s every whim at home. It all comes crashing down when Rosalie catches Joey kissing another woman at the library. This betrayal leads her to attempt suicide through sleeping pills but instead fuels a newfound hatred for Joey.
