I, Robot (2004) is a science fiction action film directed by Alex Proyas. The screenplay, written by Jeff Vintar and Akiva Goldsman, is adapted from Vintar’s original script Hardwired and inspired by Isaac Asimov’s collection of short stories from 1950. Taking place in the year 2035, humanoid robots follow the Three Laws of Robotics to serve humanity. Detective Del Spooner of the Chicago Police Department holds a deep resentment towards robots after being rescued by one in a car accident that resulted in the death of a young girl due to its logical decision-making. When Dr. Alfred Lanning, co-founder of U.S. Robotics (USR), dies in an apparent suicide by falling out his office window, he leaves a message requesting that Spooner be assigned to investigate. While the police dismiss it as a suicide, CEO Lawrence Robertson reluctantly allows Spooner to continue his investigation.

Together with robopsychologist Dr. Susan Calvin, Spooner seeks assistance from USR’s central artificial intelligence computer, VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence). While reviewing the external security footage near Lanning’s lab, they encounter corruption within the interior footage. As they continue their investigation in the lab, Spooner discovers a significant breach in the security glass overlooking the spot where Lanning fell from. Considering the fragility of Lanning’s age, Spooner concludes that someone must have deliberately caused his death and that it may have been a robot responsible for it. Suddenly, an NS-5 emerges from a container, aims a gun at Spooner, and quickly escapes from the premises.
