If Only (2004)

If Only (2004) is a romantic fantasy drama film directed by Gil Junger and starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Paaul Nicholls. Ian Wyndham is a British businessman living in London with his American musician girlfriend, Samantha Andrews. The movie follows them throughout a day filled with various mishaps – from Samantha getting burned on a kettle, to Ian’s watch breaking, to Coca-Cola staining Samantha’s clothes, and Ian struggling to focus during an important work meeting due to interruptions from Samantha. Feeling overlooked and unloved, Samantha expresses her frustrations to Ian. In an attempt to reconcile, Ian makes one final gesture towards her. But despite his efforts, an angry Samantha storms off into a taxi without him while he remains on the sidewalk.

The taxi crash claims Samantha’s life. Ian, heartbroken, returns to their apartment from the hospital. As he searches through Samantha’s notebook, he discovers a song she had been working on. Clutching the notebook, he falls asleep and wakes up to the sound of Samantha’s voice. In disbelief, he finds her lying next to him in bed. Though initially scared, Ian realizes it must have all been a dream when he sees her alive and well. He feels overjoyed to have her by his side again. The events of the day are eerily similar to those in his dream but happen at different times and in different ways. Certain that it was a premonition, Ian fears for Samantha’s life once again as the day comes to an end.
