Immortals (2011)
Immortals (2011) is an American fantasy action film directed by Tarsem Singh. When the Twelve Olympians confined the treacherous Titans beneath Mount Tartarus, they also lost possession of the Epirus Bow. In 1228 BC, Hyperion, an oppressive ruler, seeks out the bow in order to unleash the Titans from their prison. His plan involves abducting Phaedra, a young oracle gifted with prophetic dreams and visions. Theseus, a skilled warrior trained by the wise Old Man, has been chosen by the gods for a special purpose. Along with his mother Aethra, who is shunned due to her illegitimate son, Theseus faces the wrath of Hyperion as he attacks their village. Despite putting up a valiant fight, Theseus is ultimately detained and forced to witness Aethra’s brutal murder at the hands of Hyperion. While deeply empathetic towards the suffering humans under Hyperion’s rule, especially Athena among the Olympians, Zeus has forbidden any interference in mortal affairs.
If the Titans cannot be released, they must put their trust in mankind’s free will to defeat Hyperion. Zeus has personally trained Theseus in the form of an Old Man, choosing to assist him as a human rather than a god. Theseus is then enslaved and forced to work in a salt mine. While being held captive nearby, Phaedra has a vision of Theseus embracing Hyperion and this incites her and her sisters to attack the guards and start a riot. In the midst of the chaos, she seizes the opportunity to escape with Theseus and other slaves. Pursuing Hyperion leads them to try and take control of a boat, but they are overpowered by his formidable army. However, unbeknownst to Zeus, Poseidon emerges from Olympus and dives into the ocean, creating a massive tidal wave that decimates Hyperion’s soldiers.
