In Her Shoes (2005)
Curtis Hanson directed the American romantic comedy-drama film, In Her Shoes (2005), written by Susannah Grant and based on Jennifer Weiner’s novel of the same name. Raised by their father Michael and stepmother Sydelle after their mother Caroline’s tragic death in a car accident, sisters Maggie and Rose Feller are quite dissimilar. Despite her flaws, Rose is fiercely protective of Maggie, while Maggie, a free spirit with dyslexia, struggles to hold down a job and turns to alcohol and men for support. When Sydelle kicks Maggie out, she reluctantly moves into Rose’s apartment in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square. As Maggie attempts to find work but only causes more problems for Rose- including getting her car towed – their already strained relationship takes a turn for the worse when Rose walks in on Maggie in bed with Jim, someone she was dating.
Enraged and heartbroken, Rose throws her out once again. A few days earlier, while searching her father’s desk for funds, Maggie stumbled upon a collection of old cards for herself and Rose. Inside were sums of money from their distant grandmother Ella. With no place to call home and no job prospects, Maggie sets out to Deerfield Beach, Florida to track down Ella. Under the impression that Maggie is vacationing, Ella extends an invitation for her to stay. Confidentially telling her friend Ethel, Ella reveals that Caroline was battling mental illness and had entrusted Ella with the care of her daughters before her passing. Over time, however, it becomes clear to Ella that Maggie’s motives were solely focused on sunbathing and taking advantage of her generosity.
