In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
The historical adventure-drama film In the Heart of the Sea (2015), directed and produced by Ron Howard and written by Charles Leavitt, is based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s non-fiction book The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. This true story follows the sinking of the American whaling ship in 1820, which served as inspiration for Herman Melville’s famous novel Moby-Dick. In 1850, Melville seeks out Thomas Nickerson, the last surviving member of the Essex crew, hoping to pay for his account of the disaster. Initially reluctant, Nickerson eventually agrees after encouragement from his wife. The film then transports viewers back to 1820 where young Nickerson has signed on as a cabin boy for Nantucket’s whaling company who are determined to secure valuable whale oil. Despite his years of experience, veteran whaler Owen Chase is disappointed to be selected as first mate rather than captain.
The captain, George Pollard, comes from a well-known whaling family but lacks experience. He is envious of Chase’s popularity and expertise. This leads to tension between them, causing Pollard to ignore Chase’s advice and sail into a storm. However, realizing that returning empty-handed would harm their reputations, they agree to set aside their differences. Eventually, the crew manages to kill their first bull sperm whale. Despite this success, three months go by without catching any more whales in the Atlantic Ocean. Realizing the lack of opportunities there, Pollard decides to sail to the Pacific Ocean via Cape Horn in hopes of better luck. In Atacames, Ecuador, they encounter a Spanish captain who shares that his crew found abundant ‘Offshore Grounds’ 2,000 miles west.
